The World’s Smallest Dog, With the Biggest Personality in the House
Thinking about a Chihuahua? Here’s the honest tour: the history, the quirks, the care, and the reasons 200+ of our families would do it all again.
Meet the Chihuahua
Officially the smallest dog breed on earth. Unofficially? The boldest, most devoted, most personality-per-pound creature you will ever share a couch with. Ask anyone who’s loved one and they’ll tell you the same thing: the size is the least interesting thing about them.
Forget the “purse dog” cliché. Real Chihuahuas are sturdy little athletes with thousand-year-old Mexican roots and opinions about everything — especially where they sit (on you) and when dinner is (now).

History & Origin
From the Ancient Toltecs to Your Living Room
The Chihuahua’s ancestors — known as the Techichi — were companions to the Toltec civilization in Mexico more than a thousand years ago. The modern Chihuahua takes its name from the Mexican state of Chihuahua, where small dogs of this type were rediscovered in the mid-1800s. From those origins, this breed traveled the world to become one of the most recognizable companion dogs in history — a tiny dog with a long, proud lineage.
Coat Varieties
Chihuahuas come in two officially recognized coat types, each with its own appeal:
- Smooth Coat Short, glossy, and close-fitting. Easy to maintain — a quick weekly brush is plenty. Smooth coats highlight the breed’s signature apple-shaped head and expressive eyes.
- Long Coat Soft, slightly wavy fur with a feathered ruff, ears, tail, and legs. A weekly brushing session keeps the coat tangle-free and beautifully fluffy.
Common Colors & Markings
Chihuahuas come in nearly every color and pattern a dog can come in — fawn, cream, chocolate, black & tan, blue, sable, brindle, merle, and many combinations of these. Markings can be solid, spotted, splashed, or masked
Temperament & Personality
A devoted little watchdog in a tiny package. Translation for your daily life:
- Loyal — often picks one favorite human and loves them with embarrassing intensity (while still adoring the whole household).
- Alert — a built-in doorbell. You’ll always know when a leaf moves outside.
- Confident — has absolutely no idea how small they are. Brave to the point of comedy.
- Affectionate — professional lap dog. Runs on warmth, cuddles, and proximity to “their” person.
- Smart — learns fast, with a light stubborn streak. Short, upbeat sessions win; drilling loses.
- Portable — apartment, office, road trip, quiet evenings: goes anywhere, fits everywhere.
Health Considerations
Chihuahuas routinely outlive bigger dogs — but tiny bodies come with tiny-body fine print. Here’s what to know (and why none of it should scare you off):
- Patellar Luxation Slipping kneecaps can occur in toy breeds. Reputable parents are screened, and a healthy weight helps prevent issues.
- Dental Care Tiny mouths, big teeth — daily dental attention and regular cleanings are essential for long-term health.
- Hypoglycemia (puppies) Very young Chihuahuas can dip in blood sugar quickly. We send each puppy home with detailed feeding guidance.
- Cold Sensitivity With so little body mass, Chihuahuas feel cold easily. A sweater in winter isn’t a fashion statement — it’s good husbandry.
Long, Happy Lives
Here’s the part that changes the math: 14 to 17 years, with many crossing 18 in good health. You’re not getting a pet for a phase of life — you’re gaining a tiny shadow for graduations, moves, new jobs, all of it.
The Short Version
Devoted, expressive, portable, hilarious. Wonderful in apartments, with retirees, with quiet professionals — and with any family willing to learn the gentle art of handling a three-pound creature like the treasure they are.
And here’s our part: every CrownTreasurePups puppy is socialized from day one to be exactly the confident, sweet companion the breed is meant to be. The temperament isn’t luck. It’s the program.
